Our Interpersonal Whole-Brain Model of Care transforms lives by helping children develop a better-connected brain through the implementation of a customized plan of care in a safe, loving environment. 


Over the past 25 years, we have worked with over 4,000 students and refined our model of care from assessment, individualized program design, environment placement, implementation, and measurement — all to ensure life change occurs. 


The Whole-Brain Model of Care is grounded in science and guided by love. It is built around the following principles. 


The Brain Is The Foundation For Full Potential

Our Interpersonal Whole Brain Model of Care consists of four dynamics that we call “N-PEBL” 


  • Neurodevelopment


  • Physiology

  • Emotional Behavioral

  • Learning


Strong neurodevelopment is shown through a well-connected and properly communicating brain. That neurodevelopmental foundation must be in place in order for a child to reach his or her full potential in physiology, emotional behavioral well-being, and learning.



The Brain Is Capable of Change

The brain is amazing! The latest research in neuroscience shows us that the brain is malleable, plastic, and constantly changing. The brain can form the right neural pathways based on the frequency and intensity of the input and stimulation it receives.


The Brain Must Develop From The Ground Up

In order for the brain to be operating at its fullest capacity, we must first address issues at the most basic, foundational level before pushing for higher skill sets. Neural pathways must be operating effectively at the brain stem, before working up to the midbrain, and then the cortex.



Learning & Neural Growth Are Maximized In Safe Environments

Research is clear; a child must perceive an environment as “safe” in order to maximize learning and new neural growth. If an environment is not perceived to be safe, the brain generates a fight or flight response by producing cortisol and adrenaline; growth and change cannot occur in this survival state.


Interpersonal relationship deeply shapes and influences the development of a child’s brain. Our commitment is that each child will experience their customized plan of care in safe environments with instructors that embrace our core values of hope, truth, and love.

How We Implement The Interpersonal Whole-Brain Model Of Care

Our Interpersonal Whole-Brain Model of Care encompasses a “whole child” approach in the assessment, individualized program creation, implementation, and measurement of how the brain changes.


Below are the specific steps we implement to help your child reach his or her full potential through a better-connected brain. 


Welcome Any Behavioral Or Neurological Challenge

Because the brain is malleable and capable of change, our Interpersonal Whole-Brain Model of Care transforms lives no matter the age, diagnosis, or level of functioning.  By focusing on building the right neural pathways, students will develop a foundation that leads to greater learning, stronger physiology, and increased emotional/behavioral control. 




Evaluate Each Child Holistically

Each student entering into Jacob’s Ladder completes a comprehensive evaluation around his or her neurodeveloment, physiology, learning style, and social, emotional, behavior skills. The assessment includes a global neurodevelopmental assessment unique to Jacob’s Ladder of over 300 indicators, a comprehensive academic assessment, a nutritional consultation, and a QEEG brain map. 


The QEEG Brain Map determines specific regions of the brain that are experiencing excessive or deficient activity within the bands of frequency measured. It results in a visual representation of areas of the brain experiencing dysregulation, as well as information on impaired conduction, brain wave balance, and connectivity between different regional neuronal networks.



Customize A Plan Of Care To Build The Brain From The Ground Up

We don't place children in a program. We build a program tailored to the needs of each individual child based on their evaluation. Each customized program pulls from our database of over 3,000 activities that help foster brain stimulation. Students will be placed in one of four environments to begin implementing their individualized program.



Implement Daily Because Successful Months Are Made Up Of Successful Moments

Rewiring and producing lasting change in a brain is a day-to-day process. Each individualized program consists of hundreds of interventions to be completed consistently, daily, and with high intensity. Each program is implemented by a dedicated team of teachers who care deeply about our mission and the families who we serve. 



Measure & Celebrate As The Brain Changes

Data is collected from daily activities and regular assessments to monitor how each child’s brain is changing. Individualized programs are updated so that each child continues to grow and reach his or her full potential.
